The LoTi® Digital Age Survey: A Data-Driven Approach to Tracking Technology Implementation

kelly93055

The LoTi® Digital Age Survey is a powerful tool embedded in the EPiC™ Support Dashboard, designed to measure the instructional use of technology and environmental resources in the classroom. LoTi, which stands for Levels of Technology Implementation, provides Educator Preparation Providers (EPPs) with valuable insights into their teacher candidates' use of instructional technology practices in the classroom.

This empirically validated self-assessment is administered at three key points during the preparation program—beginning, middle, and end—offering a comprehensive view of how teacher candidates' use of technology evolves over time. The LoTi Survey gathers data on program perceptions and classroom technology implementation to help inform professional development priorities and enhance the program's overall effectiveness. Through multiple measures, it tracks growth and identifies trends across different phases of the program.

Measuring Meaningful Technology Implementation

The survey is designed to assess the depth of teacher candidates' technology implementation across multiple dimensions, including:

  • Teacher Perceptions: Candidates reflect on their use of digital resources in the classroom, how they perceive their implementation of technology, and how technology enhances learning.

  • School Climate: The survey probes candidates' experiences within the broader school environment, helping to assess the level of support for technology implementation.

  • Digital Resources: It captures the specific digital tools candidates use in instruction, from basic technologies to more advanced applications that support standards-based learning.

These multiple measures allow the survey to gather diverse data points, offering a holistic view of technology implementation and providing deeper insights into the effectiveness of EPP curricula.

By capturing this data, the LoTi Digital Age Survey identifies trends in technology use and helps programs refine their course offerings to better meet the needs of their teacher candidates.

Supporting Data-Driven Decisions

The insights gathered from the LoTi Survey are invaluable for EPPs. This data can be used to:

  • Maximize Program Effectiveness: By identifying areas where technology implementation may be lacking or where candidates excel, programs can tailor their curriculum and teaching strategies.

  • Refine Course Offerings: EPPs can adjust their professional development courses based on trends identified in the survey, ultimately improving candidate performance in technology implementation.

  • Support Accreditation: The LoTi Survey is a valuable resource for completing the accreditation self-study required by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP).

The LoTi Framework has been widely recognized for its impact on education and is cited in over 270 doctoral dissertations, 120 journal and conference publications, and 13 books and anthologies. This recognition underscores the framework's credibility and value to educator preparation programs fostering technology-rich learning environments.

By incorporating the LoTi Digital Age Survey into their assessment toolkit, EPPs gain a detailed and data-driven understanding of how their teacher candidates implement technology in the classroom. This ultimately enhances the quality of education and ensures that teacher candidates are well-equipped to meet the demands of 21st-century teaching.
