Evaluating Standards-Based Assessments and Rubrics with EPiC™

The importance of creating effective, standards-based assessments and rubrics cannot be overstated. These tools are essential for accurately measuring student understanding, guiding instructional practices, and ensuring that all learners' developmental and academic needs are met. For teacher candidates, mastering the creation of such assessments is a pivotal component of their preparation, as it directly impacts their ability to foster a conducive learning environment.

One of the primary responsibilities of Educator Preparation Providers (EPPs) is to ensure that their candidates are proficient in creating standards-based rubrics aligned with assessments. This alignment is crucial for several reasons:

  • Consistency and Fairness: Standards-based assessments ensure that all students are evaluated against the same criteria, promoting fairness and consistency in grading.

  • Targeted Instruction: By aligning assessments with standards, teachers can identify specific areas where students need improvement and tailor their instruction accordingly.

  • Clear Expectations: Standards provide clear expectations for what students need to know and be able to do, helping both teachers and students stay focused on the learning targets.

The EPiC™ Key Assessment, specifically Rubric B-1 Designing Evaluation Criteria to Assess Student Learning, evaluates teachers’ ability to create rigorous assessments and detailed evaluation criteria related to learning targets and objectives. The EPiC™ Part B Scoring Tool includes easy-to-use evidence markers that help EPPs evaluate candidates' competency with measuring student performance at various levels. Below are sample evidence markers for section B-1.1 Alignment and Rigor.

When EPPs use evidence-based markers to score EPiC™ Key Assessment submissions, teacher candidates receive valuable feedback that helps them refine their skills in creating effective, standards-based assessments and rubrics that are essential for meeting the diverse developmental and academic needs of all learners. By focusing on alignment with standards, measuring higher-order thinking skills, and providing clear performance descriptors, educators can create a fair, targeted, and transparent assessment process that promotes continuous learning and improvement. The EPiC™ Key Assessment and scoring tool support this endeavor by providing a structured framework for evaluating and enhancing teachers' assessment design capabilities.
